THIRD POST Obesity

Childhood obesity causes damage to the mental health that can last a lifetime.

Obesity causes health problems and is now commonly affecting children. In almost all cases, obesity causes damage in the mental health of the individual.

“Obese adolescents are more likely than normal weight children to be victims of bullying, a study found, bolstering evidence that being fat endangers emotional as well as physical health.” www.medscape.com

Obese children are more likely to be bullied than their non obese peers regardless of sex, race, socioeconomic status, social skills, or academic achievement. This suggests that they are being bullied because of their weight and not for other reasons.

As the increases in childhood obesity continue, the damage in obese children remains pervasive. Bullying obese children starts with adults because they reflect their insecurity by remarking on the defects of others so children learn and grow with this behavior.

A study shows us the main types of bullying in childhood and demonstrates that obesity is the principal reason children are bullied at school.

All the abuses against obese children are post-traumatic, the damage will appear at a young age and will continue to appear until adolescence or maybe until adulthood. That may affect the mental development of the person who suffers from the abuse.

  1. The bullying problem on obese children is not only at school, this problem can also be seeing on their own friends and even families. Experts said that families often have good intentions to help their children, but some may end up inflicting psychological harm through misguided efforts to help children lose weight.

“A 2006 study published in Obesity found that 72 percent of nearly 2,500 overweight and obese women had been stigmatized by family members because of their weight.”

All these bullying problems also can cause that obese elementary school students miss a few more days of school on average than average and underweight students, according to a study by the Obesity Journal.

All the abuses against obese children may be post-traumatic and it will appear in a short age and it will last until adulthood. Bullying obese children starts with adults because they reflect their insecurity by remarking on the defects of others so children learn and grow with this behavior. Most of the bully children harass obese children because of their weight and not other reasons.
